Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith noted its sudden appearance: «It was not here one day, up here the next.»
While the Pacers intend to celebrate the banner at the arena before their regular season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 23, head coach Rick Carlisle stated there are no plans for a prolonged celebration.
«There`s not going to be a big thing about it,» Carlisle told reporters after practice. «It was a great run and really a lot of amazing things happened during that stretch. But you got to turn the page.»
This sentiment pervaded the Pacers` training camp, a team still riding the high of an improbable playoff journey to the NBA Finals, yet simultaneously grappling with the disappointment of a Game 7 loss and the severe injury to Tyrese Haliburton early in that decisive game.
Haliburton`s torn Achilles marked the latest in a series of playoff injuries that have reshaped the trajectory of the 2025-26 Eastern Conference. Both of the last two Eastern Conference champions face the prospect of being without their star player for most, if not all, of the season. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum suffered a torn right Achilles in the conference semifinals. Boston had reached the conference finals in three consecutive seasons and four of the past five. Indiana, meanwhile, had made back-to-back conference finals appearances and seemed well-positioned with its young core and playoff experience to return.
This leaves both Boston and Indiana to navigate an entire season with their star players likely unavailable – Haliburton has been officially ruled out, though Tatum`s status remains less definitive. Consequently, expectations for these teams, which have dominated the East in recent years, are significantly lower than usual.
«I think it`s exciting,» Celtics guard Derrick White remarked. «We`re not the hunted anymore. But just have that mindset of `We`re going to prove people wrong` and compete at a high level.»
Beyond their stars, both teams also saw other key roster pieces depart. The Celtics traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and lost Al Horford and Luke Kornet in free agency. The Pacers lost center Myles Turner in free agency. Adding to the conference shifts, the Milwaukee Bucks, in response to their own torn Achilles injury to Damian Lillard during the first round of the postseason, waived him and stretched his contract over the next five years.
This scenario creates a potentially wide-open Eastern Conference, where several teams now believe they have a legitimate shot at reaching the Finals, especially after witnessing Indiana`s surprising run last year.
«You got to focus on what you have and not what you don`t have,» Carlisle emphasized. «We want to develop and maximize.»
«One of the things I`m most proud of the last two years is the development [of our young players]. We`re going to be looking to do the same thing. We got guys that still have upside, and we want them to realize that upside. And we want to maximize what we can with wins and losses.»
Despite their intention to win, projections are not optimistic. According to ESPN BET, the Celtics are currently ranked seventh in odds to win the East, behind teams like Detroit and Philadelphia, while Indiana sits ninth.
Yet, neither the Celtics nor the Pacers intend to tank for a better draft pick or take a «gap year» from contention, sources indicate. Their goal remains to win as many games as possible, stay competitive, and foster the growth of different players in new roles.
«That`s not going to be part of the lexicon [on rebuilding] in our building, and that`s the way we`re going to focus moving forward,» Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens affirmed this summer.
The reigning Eastern Conference champions share this determined mindset.
«There`s been no internal talk about that,» Carlisle stated regarding a gap year. «We want to compete at the highest level that we can.»
A New Coaching Era for the Celtics and Pacers
FEW PEOPLE ENTER their first NBA head coaching role quite like Joe Mazzulla did. When Mazzulla took over as Celtics head coach from Ime Udoka on the eve of training camp three years ago, he became the league`s youngest coach at 34. He rapidly ascended from a Division II head coach just three years prior to leading a team consistently considered a title favorite for the past three seasons.
Mazzulla`s tenure has been defined by his intense focus. His pre- and post-game interviews often go viral for their sharp intensity and dry, sometimes unintentional, humor. Last year, when asked about the Celtics embracing their role as defending champions, Mazzulla famously responded, «People are going to say the target is on our back, but I hope it`s right on our forehead between our eyes.»
Even with shifting external expectations for the Celtics, Mazzulla`s intensity remains undimmed.
«The same thing excites me every year,» Mazzulla shared. «I get excited about, `OK, where are we as far as the trends of the league? Where are we as far as what we`ve put in up until this point? Does it really maximize the roster that we have? Does it maximize the mindset that we have? Are we truly taking advantage of the strengths that we have?`»
Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have been known for their aggressive 3-point shooting strategy, often dubbed «Mazzulla ball.» Boston led the league in 3-point attempts in each of the last two years and ranked second in his inaugural season. However, Mazzulla recently downplayed the moniker, stating, «I don`t pay too much attention to that,» and clarified that his strategic approach over the past three years was driven by the specific roster construction.
This year`s team, however, appears to lack that same abundance of shooting options.
Instead of imposing a single philosophy, Mazzulla stated his goal is to optimize the talent available on his current roster – a philosophy mirroring Carlisle`s approach a thousand miles away.
«I may have to coach completely differently than the year before,» Mazzulla explained. «In years past, you had an older, more experienced roster, four or five All-Stars on the team together. So your process is different.»
With a scoring void, Celtics guard Derrick White could step into a significantly larger offensive role. Already recognized as one of the league`s premier two-way guards, White is now positioned to become the clear second scoring option behind Jaylen Brown.
However, White has built his career by adapting to team needs. He believes focusing solely on becoming a primary scorer would detract from the qualities that earned him a four-year, $126 million extension last year.
«I know that if I focus on, `I need to score 25 points` or something, I know I won`t play well,» White admitted.
«If I just do what I do and play within the offense and do it, I might get 25 points a night, who knows? And so my goal is not, `Oh, JT is out, I can do more.` I still got to just be who I am and just do things I can to help us win games.»
Both Mazzulla and White cited the Pacers as an example of how a less star-studded but hardworking Boston team can achieve victories.
Indiana provided a blueprint last season, particularly in the playoffs, by exhausting opponents with a relentless, full-court, 48-minute play style.
«It`s a copycat league, and you see success with it and now everybody tries to do it their own way,» White observed. «You`re probably going to see that a lot around the league, and you`ve definitely seen like last year — the pressure. Everybody`s trying to pick up full and these teams are trying to just create turnovers.»
The Pacers have grown accustomed to this praise throughout the summer.
Nesmith, who spent most of his offseason near Austin, Texas, recalled several fans at baggage claim after the season expressing how the Pacers` style of play reignited their love for basketball.
«I`ve had a lot of people come up to me this summer and just say, `You made me a fan of NBA basketball again,`» Nesmith told ESPN.
The word Carlisle frequently heard associated with the Pacers all summer: inspirational.
«Really it`s a credit to the players,» Carlisle stated. «You got to have special guys that are willing to pick up full court. … that was cool to be a part of that.»
Therefore, despite missing a few key players, the core offensive principles and system of the Pacers are unlikely to change. Carlisle confirmed that Bennedict Mathurin will move into the starting lineup and Andrew Nembhard will assume more primary ball-handling duties. While Indiana will leverage Nembhard`s strengths, such as driving downhill instead of relying as much on high pick-and-rolls as Haliburton, the team will adhere to its fundamental principles.
«We`re doing the same things,» Nembhard affirmed. «We`re still trying to push the pace, play randomly. A lot of different guys touching the ball. A lot of different actions.»
However, the Pacers must delicately balance maintaining this aggressive style while acknowledging that the league will be better prepared for it this season.
«When you disrupt the industry the way we did, it`s going to disrupt back,» Carlisle warned. «And so we got to be ready for that. More teams are going to be more physical and so we`ve got to be ready to bring it up another notch.»
Haliburton`s Enduring Presence and Tatum`s Uncertain Return
Despite his season-long injury, Tyrese Haliburton has remained a consistent, positive voice within the Pacers organization.
HALIBURTON, WEARING A GREY hoodie and shorts, stood beneath a basket, waiting for a rebound. Two fringe roster players, Johnny Furphy and Taelon Peter, were engaged in a shooting contest at the end of practice, with Peter preparing to shoot from beyond the 3-point line. Furphy had set the target score, and Peter was attempting to match it. Haliburton, in addition to rebounding, fueled the competitive spirit.
«Ooooh,» he encouraged Peter with each shot. «Don`t let him beat you.»
When Peter missed, Haliburton sharply passed the ball back: «Don`t miss. You got two more.»
Peter accepted the challenge, sinking five consecutive shots to win the contest.
Even though he`ll be sidelined for the entire season, Haliburton plans to be a consistent presence with the team, both at home and on the road.
«We`ll hear his voice,» Carlisle said with a smile.
«He`s always going to have great energy. One thing about Ty, he has a consistent, positive spirit about life. He just loves it. He`s an early riser. He`s here before anybody in the morning. He`s tackled this rehab thing like a beast. It`ll be important to have him be a part of this every day.»
Haliburton was seen walking without a brace or crutches and cheerfully announced he`s back to driving. However, Indiana has already set opening night 2026 as the target for the return of last year`s postseason breakout star.
Tatum, conversely, has not ruled out a potential return this season. Five months post-injury, he has resumed light basketball activities, including a pre-camp workout video that sparked speculation about a possible return during the 2025-26 season – though neither Tatum nor the team has provided definitive timelines.
«No pressure to return back any sooner than when I`m 100 percent healthy,» Tatum stated at Celtics media day. «No pressure from Brad, Joe, the team, the organization. The most important thing is that I`m 100 percent recovered and healthy whenever I do come back.»
This point from Tatum underscores the peculiar nature of this season for both Boston and Indiana. For both teams, the most crucial developments won`t occur on the court but in the recovery journeys of their injured stars, holding the promise of brighter futures.
Rather than letting this season become a mere holding pattern, the Celtics and Pacers are using it as motivation, in their unique ways, to still make it a special year.
«It doesn`t really matter what people believe or what they say,» Nesmith concluded. «They haven`t believed in us in three years. We surprise them every single year. I don`t see what makes this year any different.»
