Heading into the U.S. Women`s Open, Maja Stark was struggling with her confidence. However, her decision to stop dwelling on those worries propelled her to secure the most significant title in women`s golf.
The 25-year-old Swede carded an even-par 72 on Sunday and successfully held onto her lead throughout the final round. Her total four-day score at Erin Hills was 7-under 281, putting her two strokes ahead of the world No. 1 Nelly Korda and Rio Takeda from Japan.
Stark explained her approach: “I think that I just stopped trying to control everything, and I just kind of let everything happen the way it happened. During the practice days, I realized that, if I just kind of hovered the club above the ground a little bit before I hit, I released some tension in my body. I think that just doing my processes well and giving myself little things like that, was the key this week because I don`t really want to rely on my confidence for stuff.”
Stark`s victory makes her the sixth Swedish player to win a women`s major championship, and the first since Anna Nordqvist`s win at the Women`s British Open in 2021. This is also Stark`s second career LPGA Tour title.
The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win the U.S. Women`s Open since Annika Sorenstam claimed her third title in 2006. The only other Swedish winner of this event was Liselotte Neumann in 1988. Stark mentioned receiving encouragement: “They texted me yesterday and just kind of said, `Bring it home.`”
Stark`s consistent play was the deciding factor as she fended off challenges from Korda and numerous other contenders.
Korda finished with a 71, while Takeda shot a 72, tying for second place. Hye-Jin Choi (68), Ruoning Yin (70), and Mao Saigo (73) shared fourth place at 4 under. Hailee Cooper (70) and Hinako Shibuno (74) finished at 3 under.
Stark`s playing partner, Julia Lopez Ramirez, who started the day just one shot off the lead, fell out of contention early, finishing with a 79 that put her tied for 19th. Lopez Ramirez had a triple bogey on the 18th hole.
This marks Korda`s best result at the U.S. Women`s Open. She had previously described her “complicated relationship” with the event, with her best prior finish being tied for eighth in 2022. She missed the cut the previous year after an opening round of 80.
Korda commented: “I played this event when I was 14 years old, so maybe a little bit more emotional about it. I mean, definitely it`s gotten my heart broken a couple times. … To have that showing last year definitely put a dagger into my heart, but that`s just golf. You`re going to lose more than you win a majority of the time. I feel like I actually learn a lot about myself and my game and where I need to improve playing the U.S. Women`s Open because it does test every part of your game.”
Korda birdied holes 7 and 8 but missed a 9-foot birdie putt on No. 9 that would have tied her for the lead. This came minutes after Stark`s streak of 21 bogey-free holes ended on No. 7.
Stark then extended her lead to three strokes by making a 14-foot birdie putt on No. 11, immediately following Korda`s missed par putt from just under 5 feet at No. 13.
Korda, Shibuno, and Takeda managed to get within two strokes of Stark with birdies on the par-5 14th, although Korda missed a 14-foot eagle putt and Shibuno missed an eagle attempt from 9½ feet.
Stark responded with a birdie of her own on No. 14, re-establishing her three-stroke advantage at 9 under par. She maintained that lead despite bogeying the final two holes.
Stark revealed her mindset: “I didn`t look at the leaderboards until I was on like 17. I caught a glimpse of it. It was nice. I wasn`t as nervous as I thought that I would be because it felt like I have somewhat control of my game and I kind of know what`s going on.”
Stark credited her caddie, Jeff Brighton, a former standup comedian, with helping her stay relaxed by telling jokes and keeping her mind off the pressure. “We just kind of tried to talk about some stuff and not be too into my own putt,” she said.
Brighton added: “I would say Maja`s quite an intense player. She tries really hard and is really competitive, so when [a player`s] intense, you`re trying between shots to just get their head away from golf.” He was seen wearing a cheesehead hat, common at Green Bay Packers games.
Stark demonstrated enough composure to earn the $2.4 million prize from the year`s most lucrative event. Now, she`s contemplating how to spend her winnings. “Maybe move out of my studio apartment can be one thing,” Stark quipped.

Es decir, definitivamente me ha roto el corazón un par de veces. … Tener esa actuación el año pasado definitivamente me clavó una daga en el corazón, pero así es el golf. Vas a perder más de lo que ganas la mayoría de las veces. Siento que realmente aprendo mucho sobre mí y mi juego y dónde necesito mejorar jugando el U.S. Women`s Open porque pone a prueba cada parte de tu juego.”
Korda hizo birdie en los hoyos 7 y 8, pero falló un putt para birdie de 9 pies en el hoyo 9 que la habría empatado en el liderato. Esto ocurrió minutos después de que la racha de Stark de 21 hoyos sin bogey terminara en el hoyo 7.

Stark dio crédito a su caddie, Jeff Brighton, un excómico de stand-up, por ayudarla a mantenerse relajada contando chistes y distrayéndola de la presión. “Simplemente intentamos hablar de algunas cosas y no concentrarnos demasiado en mi propio putt”, dijo.
Brighton añadió: “Diría que Maja es una jugadora bastante intensa. Se esfuerza mucho y es muy competitiva, así que cuando [un jugador] es intenso, intentas entre golpes que su cabeza se aleje del golf.” Se le vio usando un sombrero `cheesehead`, común en los partidos de los Green Bay Packers.
