Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has reportedly come out of his induced coma and is recovering well with his family. The 27-year-old underwent urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday`s match against Leicester.
Awoniyi was injured when he collided with the goalpost during the 2-2 draw. Despite initially receiving lengthy treatment on the pitch and being allowed to continue, he was later forced to leave the game. Further medical assessments determined that surgery was necessary.
After the first part of his emergency operation on Monday, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma. He had the second part of the surgery today and is now out of the coma, according to reports, and is “recovering well”.
Nottingham Forest is planning to launch an internal investigation into how the club`s medical team handled the injury. Reports indicate that the club`s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, is very unhappy with the situation. Marinakis reportedly confronted manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch after the match.
A statement from Nottingham Forest emphasized the importance of player health and well-being, stating that Marinakis`s reaction was driven by deep care for the team and seeing Awoniyi in discomfort. The statement clarified there was no confrontation, only shared frustration that the medical team allowed the player to continue initially.
